Disability has not deterred the spirits of this young man. Born without hands, 36 years-old moves on with great confidence and temperament to succeed in life. With skill and determination to work hard, K Mohammed Hassain strives to earn his living to lead an independent life like any normal person. And his physical disability has not dampened his desire to lead a decent living.
“I have learnt to support myself in all activities. I have grown in an environment which has made me strong mentally and inculcated self-confidence in me,” said Hassain.
But it’s not his disability that has won the hearts of many but his ability to use his legs skillfully, to do his daily chores.
“From my childhood, I have used my legs to do each and every work. There has been no practice. Just as a normal child uses its hands for playing with toys, I used my legs for the same purpose. It just came naturally to me, “he said.
Trained in repairing electronic goods, including cellphones, Hassain now assists his brother in their electronic shop, repairing cellphones. And it just takes a few seconds for him to remove the screws of the phones with his toes, using a screw driver.
“I have learnt the techniques to open a phone and do even the minutest repair in it. Now, I have regular customers who come to repair their cellphones without hesitation,” said the young man.
Hassain can repair any electronic goods, including CD players, tape recorders and radios. He is also learning to repair an LCD projector from his brother.
But this job serves only as a temporary livelihood, meeting only his personal expenses. Hassain has been seeking a government job for the past five to six years. However, these has been no response to the applications, he said, adding he has many representations to the Chief Minister’s cell also.
“I am ready to work as an office assistant or even a lift operator. I have been trying for a government job for several years but my letters to many departments have not evoked any response for far,” he says.
And all that Hassain wants to do in life is help his family. “I want to earn a decent living and support my mother. I lost my father in an accident when I was five years old and it was my family who helped me will now and I want to do something for them,” he said.
Hassain has a helping mind too, if not hands. He, along with a few of his friends, has started Jeevan Welfare Society with the aim of helping the underprivileged people. “We started this society in 1997 with the objective of helping the downtrodden and also create awareness about HIV/AIDS among the people. This society has given me a great deal of self-confidence,” he said.
“I have no role models to follow as I want to be an example to others. Physical disability is not a weakness, but being handicapped mentally is the real weakness,” he notes.
